What is it?
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced that Nigeria is included on its list of countries eligible to participate in their fully-funded 2-year Masters’ course. This means that Nigerians with a first degree from any Nigerian university are now eligible to apply for a fully-funded master’s course at 8 top universities around the world including Harvard, MIT, UC Berkeley, Cambridge, Oxford, and others.
In addition to covering tuition fees, students will also receive an annual stipend (living allowance) of $30,000 per year.
In addition to these fully-funded scholarships, there are also partial scholarships available for outstanding candidates who have been unable to secure full funding. These partial scholarships cover between 50% – 75% of tuition fees depending on financial need and other factors such as your academic performance or work experience.
What are my chances?
Did you know that of all applicants, less than 20% are successful? With a rejection rate like that, you’ll need to be strategic if you want to beat it. So let’s talk strategy: how do I get one of these scholarships? First off, pay attention to what they’re looking for. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has two main requirements for their full-ride scholarship: candidates must have an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher (or equivalent), and they must be pursuing an undergraduate degree at an accredited U.S.
college or university—and preferably at a four-year institution. If you meet those criteria, then there are still some other things to consider before applying: How many people will be applying from your school? What is your major? And where do you plan on studying abroad? To increase your chances of being selected, make sure you tailor your application accordingly.
For example, if you’re interested in studying abroad in China, focus on extracurricular activities that highlight Chinese culture; likewise, if you want to study abroad in Italy, focus on extracurricular activities related to Italian culture.
The more relevant experience and knowledge you bring with you into your application process, the better chance you have of being accepted.
How do I apply?
To be eligible, you must have been born after January 1, 1999 (or if you’re turning 19 by December 31, 2022). You must have been a resident of Nigeria for at least 10 years. You must be able to demonstrate leadership skills, community involvement, and financial needs.
And finally, you must plan to enroll full-time as an undergraduate student in an accredited college or university within 12 months of graduating from high school.
