How To Apply For The American DV Lottery

The United States gives out diversity immigrant visas (DV) each year, under several different categories. To qualify for a Diversity Visa, applicants must have at least a high school education or its equivalent or show two years of work experience in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience.

You must also meet all eligibility requirements for U.S. immigration, including not having any serious criminal convictions or other factors that would make you ineligible for a visa. If you’re eligible, you can submit an application online through DOS’s website; there is no paper application form.

Applications are accepted between October 1 and November 30 of every year; winners will be selected on a random basis during a period between May 1 and June 30 of the following year.

Tips on improving your chances

Applications for U.S. visas are almost always separated into two major categories: family-based and employment-based. In some cases, if you have a family member who is a citizen or permanent resident, you may be able to immigrate based on that relationship—but you mustn’t be trying to simply enter through someone else’s passport! The United States government does not look kindly upon those who try to abuse its immigration system.

If you can’t find a way in via employment, try looking at the American DV lottery registration application. The Diversity Visa Lottery program grants up to 55,000 immigrant visas each year from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. (For example, in 2010 there were more than 13 million applicants.) This is another avenue worth exploring if you have no other options.

Where to submit your application

all American DV lottery applications must be completed online. To access them, applicants will need to register an account on dvlottery.state.gov, which is a free process that requires a social security number, date of birth, current country of residence, and valid email address.

Once you’ve registered for an account, you can complete your application by clicking ‘Apply Now’ from within your account dashboard. Applications can only be submitted once per year, so if you don’t win in 2022 you won’t have another chance until 2023.

What happens after you have submitted the online form
After you have submitted it online, you will receive by email a confirmation number, an application ID number, and a PIN number.

You will also be asked to provide additional information, including information about your spouse or partner. In most cases, at least one family member must be present for you to submit an application. You will also need to pay the appropriate fees before submitting your application.

What happens if you win?

If you’re selected as a winner, congratulations! The U.S. government will award you a visa for a spouse or minor child or parents, but there are some rules you’ll need to adhere to claim it.

If you win, you’ll be able to submit an I-130 visa petition on behalf of your partner/child/parents—this is essentially the application form they’ll use when they apply for their green card. You can also choose to self-petition (i.e., file an I-360) if you don’t have a family member who qualifies for an immediate relative visa category. Either way, expect to wait anywhere from one year to several years before receiving your loved one’s visa.
